About the Artist(s)
Fanuel is one of the bead artists from Constantia Village. He came to South Africa in 2001 after being retrenched from a freight company in Zimbabwe, due to the political situation the country was in. Fanuel came to SA to look for greener pastures but knew he was going to have to work hard for that. He started off selling wooden bowls he brought in from Zim, but they were too heavy and not selling, so he met some guys making beaded products in Joburg and thought he’d get involved with that. Fanuel is exceptionally grateful for the bunch of artists in Joburg who taught him everything about beadwork. He moved to Cape Town as he thought this was where business was booming at the time. Unfortunately, Fanuel had problems with the police as they used to confiscate his products all the time. The Constantia Community came to the rescue and worked out a way with law enforcement to let Fanuel and his partners sell at the Village. Faneul is exceptionally good with his hands and has a way of portraying Africa’s most beloved animals in an extraordinary manner. The team uses a lot of scraps and waste material to produce their products.
Fungai Moffat is another member of the Constantia Bead Group. He is a 42-year-old artist who has been specialising in beadwork since 2005. Fungai can create anything from just some simple wire and beads. He is originally from Zimbabwe but has been living in South Africa since 2005 due to the economic situation back home which left him with no option but to turn his life into Art. He was a qualified teacher back in Zimbabwe but now is a full-time artist.
